Mantra Patronus (Expecto Patronum)

Mantra Patronus merupakan pelindung berbentuk hewan, dan salah satu cara untuk mempertahankan melawan Dementor dan Makhluk lainnya.

Harry Potter adalah salah satu penyihir termuda yang bisa menggunakan Patronus, ia diajarkan melakukannya pada tahun 1993 oleh Remus Lupin.

Mantra Patronus, seperti bentuk Animagus, yang telah dikatakan untuk mencerminkan kepribadian atau perasaan dari penyihir.

Mantra ini memerlukan suatu memori yang sangat membahagiakan, dan kemudian mengatakan mantra: "Expecto patronum". Karena itu, emosi negatif bisa menyulitkan penyihir saat menggunakan mantra Patronus. Misalnya, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, dan Hermione Granger semua mengalami kesulitan ber-Patronuses ketika di bawah pengaruh negatif liontin Salazar Slytherin, salah satu Horcruxes Lord Voldemort, dan setelah menyaksikan kematian Fred Weasley dalam pertempuran.

Bentuk dari Patronous bisa berubah jika penyihirnya memiliki pergolakan emosi yang sangat mendalam. Sebagai contoh, Nymphadora Tonks Patronusnya berbentuk werewolf karena akan mencerminkan kecintaannya pada Remus Lupin. Contoh lain adalah Severus Snape, yang Patronus adalah kijang betina, sama seperti Lily Evans.

Penggunaan lain dari Patronous ditemukan oleh Albus Dumbledore, yang menemukan cara menggunakan Patronous untuk menyampaikan pesan. Sumber komunikasi ini diyakini eksklusif untuk para anggota Orde Phoenix.

Kata Latin exspecto atau expecto berarti "Aku mengamati" atau "Aku menunggu".

Patronus berarti "pelindung" atau "wali" dalam bahasa Latin.

Jadi secara kasar Expecto Patronum diterjemahkan menjadi "Aku menunggu perlindungan".
